Before you plant

Drainage, depth and how much soil you actually need

Most balcony planting fails on pot depth and drainage, not on the plant. Four checks before you order.

  1. Check for a drainage hole. Where a planter has none, the listing says so - it needs an inner pot or a drilled hole, or roots sit in water.
  2. Depth matters more than width. Leafy greens manage in 15-20 cm; tomatoes and chillies want 30 cm or more.
  3. Railing boxes are sized to the railing. Measure the rail width and check the bracket range on the page before ordering.
  4. Terracotta dries faster than plastic. In a hot balcony that means more watering, not a worse pot. The material is stated on every listing.
