Containers dry from every side, not just the top. What changes between April and July, and what self-watering pots really do.
A pot is not a small garden bed
Ground soil loses water from the surface. A container loses it from the surface and through the walls, and a dark plastic pot on a west-facing balcony can sit twenty degrees above air temperature by late afternoon. That is why a plant that needed water every third day in February needs it twice a day in May, and why the same plant rots in July if you keep to the May routine.
Water early, and water properly
One thorough watering until it runs from the drainage hole beats three splashes. Splashing wets the top inch, the roots stay dry underneath, and the plant grows a shallow root system that then cooks. Early morning is better than evening — the pot has all day to use it, and the surface dries before night, which keeps fungus down.
What self-watering pots do and do not do
They hold a reservoir under the compost and let the plant draw up what it needs through a wick. That works well in dry heat and buys you a day or two away from home. What they do not do is fix bad drainage: in monsoon the reservoir fills from above, the compost never dries, and you get exactly the waterlogging you were trying to avoid. Most have an overflow — find it, and check it is clear before the rains.
Shade cloth beats more water
If a plant is wilting by noon every day, the answer is usually less sun rather than more water. Even a light cloth over the hottest two hours changes the daily loss dramatically, and it costs less than replacing a pot with a bigger one.
